Telecommunication network


The Tetra system in Iceland was built in 2007 – 2009. It now has 154 Base Stations in function and is covering most of the country. 

The system is from Motorola and has the name  Dimetra 6,1. It is a state of the art system serving all respond units In Iceland, police, fire, ambulance, coast guard, Road Administration, Isavia,  the Voluntary Rescue units, ICESAR, and also a lot of other users i.e. the Power Companies, the Heavy Industry , The City of Reykjavik, the bus companies, travel companies etc. 

The system has now about 5.500 users and has proven it self in two major disasters, an earthquake and a volcanic eruption, as  a very reliable and functional communication system.

The system is still under expansion where at least 5 to 7 new Base Stations will be built this year. 

As Tetra has expanded in the Highlands the phone companies have followed suit with the result that there is now GSM coverage in large areas of the wilderness.
