At present, the country's telecommunications companies are shutting down their 3G mobile networks.
The telecommunications companies (Síminn, Sýn and Nova) warn that certain handsets will not be able to make emergency calls to 112 when 3G is switched off. Therefore, Neyðarlínan, Fjarskiptastofa and the telecommunications companies encourage owners of devices who have received an SMS from their telecom provider, advising them that it is necessary to update or replace their device, take action as soon as possible.
In connection with the shutdown, an automated responder has been set up with the phone number 1280 where users can check whether their handset will still be able to make emergency calls after the 3G transmitters have been switched off.
Owners of older devices and/or handsets purchased abroad are especially encouraged to call 1280 to check whether their device supports the latest technology.
Important: Do not call 112 to test your connection, as this could increase traffic and prevent genuine emergency calls from getting through.
Handsets that rely on the 3G mobile system will lose connection and will not be able to make calls when the last transmitters have been switched off.
Users should contact their telecommunications company to ensure their handset is compatible with the latest technology.
The shutdown of 3G in this country is in line with global developments, as 3G networks are now outdated and no longer meet modern speed and safety requirements.
