It can be difficult to see the signs because often they are hidden. Even if someone threatens you with violence you can always seek help. When someone forces you to commit a crime to benefit from it themselves, it is human trafficking.

Michael just moved to Iceland after getting a job and housing through his friend Fred. At first, the jobs were part-time cleaning but soon Fred started taking Michael out driving at night to look at houses in different neighborhoods. One night Fred hands Michael a crowbar and challenges him to break into one of the houses. Fred threatens to hurt Michael’s children in his home country if he does not do it.

Michael is afraid of Fred so he does it, and soon Michael finds himself frequently breaking into houses chosen by Fred. Despite the fact that Fred takes all the profit from the break-ins, Michael does not dare to object him because he feels like Fred would hurt him or his family “if he does something stupid”.
