VHF (very high frequency, or metre-wave radar) is useful for telecommunications over long distances and is therefore commonly used in communication at sea.

DSC call channel 70 is monitored 24/7, and channel 16 is also monitored 24/7. Calls due to reporting obligations are also monitored on channel 9.
