The role of the Office of the Ombudsman for Children is to look after that children’s rights, needs and interests are taken into consideration. Everyone can go to The Office of the Ombudsman for Children and questions from children are always answered first.

Among the projects is to educate children and adults about The Convention on the Rights of the Child, create public discussion about children’s affairs and gather and publish information about children’s conditions and the position of specific groups of children.

Kids from 12 to 17 years old can take part in the Ombudsman's advisory group. There kids meet up and talk about how to improve human rights for children. You can sign up here (form in Icelandic). 

On their website, children can send in a question about anything (form in Icelandic). No question is to silly or stupid. Questions are answered as soon as possible and they appear anonymously on the site. Children can call the children's number 800 5999, free of charge. A communication counsellor assists everyone in organized sports or youth activities. There is a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, or any kind of violence within organized sports and youth activities. You can talk to a communication counsellor and get help due to incidents that occur without having to fear consequences. A communication counsellor helps with submitting the complaint to the appropriate authority.

Everyone in the country who attends organized athletic practices or social activities can reach out to the communication counsellor about bullying or abuse that they think they have experienced in their sports or youth activities. That includes children, youth, and adults, participants, practitioners, staff, volunteers, and administrators.

You can get free counselling if you have experienced or witnessed bullying, sexual harassment, or abuse in sports and youth activities.  You can book a consultation or receive information by phone at 8399100 or send an email to samskiptaradgjafi[hjá]samskiptaradgjafi.is. There is an open phone line every Tuesday from 10:00–11:00. You can also call during working hours outside of this time and will be answered if a communication counsellor is available. When a communication counsellor is contacted, a certain procedure is followed.

A communication counsellor is here to listen, support, and assist you in all cases related to inappropriate behaviour or abuse within organized sports or youth activities.

Save the Children offer consultation about children's welfare issues.

Save the Children (Barnaheill) is an organization which protects the rights of children. You can contact them for information on anything regarding the welfare of children, including advice regarding responses to violence against children. They offer legal advice, information about custody issues and children's rights.

On their website, it is possible to report illegal and inappropriate online content regarding or directed at children. Children can report content concerning themselves or other children. Reports are anonymous and forwarded to the police.

If you suspect that a child is being abused, it is your duty to notify child protective services. To report, you can either call 112 or write through the webchat. To get advice, call Save the Children telephone: 5535900, or send them an email to barnaheill@barnaheill.is.

Protection and information on children's rights

Save the Children (Barnaheill) offers consultation about the welfare of children. On their website, it is possible to report inappropriate online behaviour against children.

Bullying is repeated abuse, physical or mental, in which one or more bully an individual who has difficulty defending themselves. In order to stop the bullying, it is important to recognise the signs.

The advisory board on bullying provides consultation on bullying cases involving students in compulsory and upper secondary schools.

If the case cannot be resolved in a satisfactory manner within the school or municipality, or due to the alleged inaction of those same parties, you can refer bullying cases to the advisory board. They will work to reach a satisfactory resolution in the case and issue an advisory opinion based on the data and information that the board receives.

Those who can seek assistance from the advisory board are: students, parents or guardians, school staff, and others who work with children. This also applies to:

after-school centres for students in the lower grades of compulsory school

social and recreational activities under the auspices of schools

all other activities under the auspices of compulsory schools
