How to I participate?

The format of Sexan is simple. Participants receive education in schools and/or youth centres and get the opportunity to create and submit a finished short film, maximum 3 minutes in length. The competition topics are four manifestations of digital violence:

  • consent
  • nude image
  • grooming
  • youth fights

In addition, there is an open category for anything that you think is important for all 7th-grade kids to know about.

You can submit a film yourself or ask your teacher or youth centre staff to do it. The submission portal will be open, as mentioned before, from February 3, 2024, to April 8, 2025.

  • It's best to have the film in "landscape" format (16:9) and the image quality should be 1920x1080px or higher.
  • Put the SEXAN logo at the end of the film (as an end card). You can download it further down the page.
  • Remember that the file you submit needs to show the title of the short film, the name of your school, and your class.

Winners of 2023 og 2024

Participate!

Jury and winning films

Participants have free rein with scriptwriting, production, and post-production. Each school may submit a maximum of 3 films to the competition, but a jury consisting of representatives from the youth council, RÚV, MMS, and the film industry will select the three best short films, which will be shown in cinemas, on the UngRÚV website, and distributed to all primary schools in the country as educational material.

The winning films will be screened at Bíóparadís during the Children's Culture Festival and on the KrakkaRÚV website. Additionally, the winning films will be sent to all schools in the country and used for educational purposes for all 7th graders. Below, you can find everything you need to know about filmmaking and digital violence, as well as teaching packages for teachers and instructors.

We especially encourage young people of foreign origin, LGBTQ+ youth, and disabled youth to participate!

How do I know what the topics mean?

Below is a clear and simple explanation of what grooming, nude pictures, consent, and youth fighting mean. Remember that a good short film shows what kids can do to help those who experience digital violence.

What is grooming?

How can I help someone who is being groomed?

Nude pictures

Manneskja situr við fartölvu en heldur höndunum fyrir andlitið.

Is it okay to send someone a nude picture they didn't ask for?

Consent

Is it still consent if I said yes before but now say no?

Fighting

Manneskja styður höndum á gagnaugun. Henni líður greinilega illa. Eldingar eru teiknaðar hjá höfðinu.

What happens if I share a fight video?

In their own words

We asked seventh-grade kids to explain what it means to participate in fights, send nude pictures, what grooming is, and what it means to get consent. If you want to create a short film about something else that you think all 7th graders should know, that's also possible. Just remember that the story must be clear and have a beginning, middle (something that happens), and end. A good short film also shows what kids can do to help those who experience digital violence.

How do filmmakers make movies?

To become skilled in short film making, it's sometimes good to ask those who know more. Here you can find conversations with the nation's top filmmakers, each in their own field.
